Police officer kicks debris

Comments:

First — Nice angle shows both a pile-up of crushed cars and the bystanders watching from an overhead bridge.

Second — Good use of ambient light in this stark, gritty fire scene.

Third — Photographer captured a moment with the police officer trying to clear debris from a highway during a snowstorm.

Comments:

First — We liked this above the others because of all the action going throughout the frame. The fingertips on the ball, the falling player, and the reactions of fans and the referee.

Second — Nice peak action of a basketball player driving to the basket. The photographer’s overhead position made this photo stand out.

Third — Nicely framed symmetry in the action, the falling player made the moment more dynamic.

HM — Looming player made this routine game photo more interesting.

Artist Sketches

Comments:

First — Well framed photo, the angled straws draw the eye to the ball.

Second — An amusing photo of two kids with big boxing gloves.

Third — The hanging arm plays off the artist’s arm nicely.

Feature Multiple

2 — Georgia Rhodes

Barbershop quartet

3 — Katie Rausch

Church Diversity Program

Comments:

First — A collection of pictures from a church which burned was the best of the entries in this category. The photographer followed the story for several days after the fire.

Second — An interesting group of photos about a barbershop harmony group. The main photo is supported well by the other photos.

Third — The best of the rest. Best image is the main art, could have been better with more photos to describe the story.

Comments:

First — Never seen anything like this portrait before, the way it was framed with the eye and the arm. Simple lighting but effective. Stood out immediately from the others.

Second — This portrait effectively illustrates the story of people moving out of the state, and gets right to the point.

Third — Nice concept to illustrate the story, leaves us wondering just how it was done. The starburst effect helps draw attention to the subject.

HM — An interesting approach, could have been cropped from the bottom.
