News

1st — Hannah Engelson/York Dispatch – Fire reaction

2nd — Nichole Hoerner/State News- Inauguration hug

3rd — Nichole Hoerner/State News- Flags at the inauguration

Comments::

1st place was a family reacting to a house fire. The photographer got a nice moment in a difficult situation. Did the photographer try to get names? 2nd place captured the emotion of President Barack Obama’s inauguration with two women hugging. 3rd place, also at the inauguration, was a graphic picture of people cheering and waving flags.

Sports

1st — Jason Chiou/State News – Falling for a rebound

2nd — Anna Bakeman/Michigan Daily – Redhawk downed

3rd — Jason Chiou/State News – Rebound scuffle

HM — Jason Chiou/State News – Raymar Morgan

HM — Jason Chiou/State News – Matthew Stafford sack

HM — Jason Chiou/State News – MSU/OSU basketball reaction

Comments:

1st place was a great picture of an Illinois player falling on the back of a MSU player. 2nd place was a UM hockey goal on Miami of Ohio. Liked the reaction of the players, while also getting the puck. Wish the players were brightened a little. 3rd place was another basketball rebound battle. It looks like Draymond Green is tackling Dominique Keller of Illinois. HM were the best of the rest … Nice perplexed reaction of Raymar Morgan. Wish the football sack photo had a tighter crop from the right. Liked the two MSU players celebrating after defeating Ohio State.

Feature Single

1st — Gabrielle Moore/State News – Face paint

2nd — Angeli Wright/State News – Mason Orchestral Society

3rd — Nick Dentamaro/State News – Horse hug at the stock seat clinic

HM — Georgia Rhodes/Jackson Citizen Patriot – Clapping at a MLK commemoration

HM — Georgia Rhodes/Jackson Citizen Patriot – MLK Celebration hug

HM — Josh Radtke/State News – MSU Community Music School

Comments:

1st place was the clear favorite with a girl looking at a mirror to see her face paint. 2nd place was a well composed picture of violin players. 3rd place was a quiet moment of a student hugging a horse. The HM of a MLK commemoration captured a boy clapping and surrounded by other hands clapping. If the picture had been cropped more tightly it would have placed higher. We really thought it was a nice and unusual way to see an event. The hugging picture was a good moment. The community music school picture had nice composition, kudos for not shooting the students in a straight-forward way.

Feature Multiple

1st — Hannah Engelson/York Dispatch – Habitat for Humanity

2nd — Sam Wolson/Michigan Daily – Fine (dumpster) dining

3rd — Max Collins/Michigan Daily – Ranger challenge

Comments:

1st place documented the building of a Habitat for Humanity home and a woman moving into it. The entry easily rose to the top because it follows a storyline. The pictures show the photographer’s dedication to the project. Would like to see a much, much tighter edit. 2nd place was moved from the news category. A group of photos showing “freegans” – people who dine from garbage. Beautiful available light and color. Great overall vision. Too bad the pictures couldn’t have been displayed better. 3rd place followed the ROTC Ranger Challenge. Good graphic pictures. The pictures needed cutlines and a stronger edit.

Portrait/Illustration

1st – Sam Wolson/Michigan Daily – Movieland, Mich.

2nd – Nick Dentamaro/State News – Breaking from violence

3rd – Sean Cook/State News – Boot collectors

HM – Jason Chiou/State News – Fred Sheill

Comments:

1st place was a well composed portrait of a person looking through a film reel. 2nd lit and composed well of a Palestinian with a flag. 3rd place was a picture of two students with boots. Liked the way the boots were placed in between their feet. HM placed because of the man’s body language.
