UAW on Strike

Comments:

First — By far the best photograph in the category. Great story, moment, and layering. Isolated light on the kid separates him from everyone else that falls into shadow. The background also adds a lot and gives a sense of place. Even though this was from a planned festival the judges thought this should have been entered into the feature category.

Second — Composition helps the content and adds to a feeling of boredom and solitude.

Third — Clean strike photograph, sign on both shoulders compliment body language and feeling of the burden he is facing. The surrounding fence and sign give context to the bigger story.

HM — John Ehlke

Pylon Dive

Comments:

First — We commend the photographer for staying with the play and making a picture that isn’t always obvious.

Second — Nice tight celebration. Photographer moved in close to share the strong and telling emotion. A better caption would have helped this image and put this moment in context with the bigger picture of the day. Not having names of two of the three players is unacceptable.

Third — Regardless of the bad reproduction, the image had a clean peak moment. The composition helped lead into and frame the strong action.

HM — Good heads up on the part of the photographer for proper lensing and strong action moment.

Disc Golf

Comments:

First — Strong vision, light and moment. The layering of the elements added depth and texture to the photograph.

Second — Like the first place image, the photo uses foreground and background elements nicely combined with a sweet moment.

Third — Photographer got right down to what was important: the genuine moment between mother and son.

HM 1 — Beautiful light, but this image lacked the moment in each image that placed higher.

HM 2 — Nice storytelling moment. The composition could have been a little better, the cluttered background was a little distracting.

Feature multiple

1 — Katie Rausch
The Flint Journal, Michigan State University
Coming Home

2 — Jeana-Dee Allen

Savoring Summer

3 — Katie Rausch
The Flint Journal, Michigan State University
Picture Perfect

Comments:

First — Tells the most complete story. The images work together nicely and had visual variety.

Second — Nice tight edit, the two images shared the enjoyment of celebrating the final days of summer.

Third — Fun feeling established from a typical everyday event that the community can relate to.
