Member Clip Contest rules
There are now two different clip contests with students having there own separate clip contest. Students can enter both contests, but must send a set of clips to each contest chairperson.
Eligibility
The contest is open to all MPPA members whose dues are paid for the month of competition entered. New or renewal dues must be received by the MPPA during the contest month.
Contest Categories
NEWS: Planned and unplanned events in one or more photos.
SPORTS: Sports action and sports feature in one or more photos.
FEATURE SINGLE PICTURES: Events and subjects (other than News or Sports) in one photo. Illustrations are included in this category.
FEATURE MULTIPLE PICTURES: Events and subjects (other then News or Sports) depicted in photo story, essay, sequence or series.
Deadlines
All entries must reach the clip chairpersons by the 15th of the month following the month of publication.
Entry Preparation
All submissions must have been published either in the newspaper or on the newspapers website.
Please make sure these fields are filled out in the “File Info” of the photo:
If you use Photoshop:
Author: Your name and publication name (example: Scott Park/Citizen Patriot)
Description: This is the caption. NOTE: Your credit should NOT appear in the description field.
If you use Photo Mechanic:
Photographer: Your name and publication name (example: Scott Park/Citizen Patriot)
Caption: This is the caption. NOTE: Your credit should NOT appear in the description field.
Please name your files using the following guidelines:
FEA_ICECREAM_09182010.jpg
FEA = Three letter category code
ICECREAM = Short word(s) slug
09182010 = Publication date either online at the paper’s website or in the paper. All entries must be published either online or in the paper.
Use the following three letter category codes for your file names:
FEA = Feature Single
MUL = Feature Multiple
For this category label your entries with a number for the sequence you want the images viewed.
FEA_ICECREAM1_09182010.jpg, FEA_ICECREAM2_09182010.jpg
NEW = News
SPO = Sports
All submissions must be JPG. You can save them at the maximum.
Please size the photos to 600px on the longest side.
Put the photos in a folder and use the “compress” or “create archive” option to make one zip file.
Attach the zip file to an email and send it to: memberclips@mppa.org
The clip chairperson may disqualify an entry if information is incorrect, illegible or missing.
Entry Limitations
There is no limit to the number of entries a photographer may enter each month.
The same picture may be entered as often as it is published unless it has previously won in the contest. However, the same picture cannot be entered in more than one contest category for the same month, nor may a picture entered singly appear as part of a multiple-picture entry for the same month. If the same picture appears in more than one entry, the clip chairpersons may disqualify both entries.
Each entry must be the work of an individual photographer.
Point System
Each photographer entering the contest receives two points per month entered. First place receives 50 points, second place receives 40 points and third place 30 points. The judges have the option to award honorable mentions which receive 10 points each.
Photographer of the Year
The photographer who accumulates the most points during the calender year will be named Michigan Clip Photographer of the Year provided he or she has shown versatility by winning in at least two of the four contest categories for the year. The winner will receive an award at the annual MPPA seminar/banquet.
In case of a year-end tie within top-10 scores, the rank(s) beneath the tie will be skipped for the next award. For example, a two-way tie for first place leaves third place for the next highest photographer.
Contest Agreements
It is understood that any copyright of the entry itself remains the property of the photographer or employer of the photographer. However, all participants agree that by entering the contest, they give permission to MPPA publications to reproduce winning entries. Winners must provide a print of their winning photograph to the MPPA upon request.
