Comments:
So often it’s a matter of inches when it comes to cropping and composition.
Watch for this when shooting and editing. And wait for the moment. Even if we are in a
rush, the moments are usually there if we watch and wait.

Sports

3rd Sarah Miller/Bay City Times, Bay County Wrestling
HM: Ken Stevens/Muskegon Chronicle, MCC-Hope basketball
HM: Cory Morse/Muskegon Chronicle, All Out
Comments:
First place definitely jumped out to the front of the pack. Nice clean
background and the peak moment was captured. Second and third places also had nice
moments, but could have used better cropping. The most interesting part of the third
place winner was lost. It would have probably won had the photographer cropped a lot
tighter on the face.

Feature/Single

1st John Tully/Midland Daily News, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like…”
2nd Kendra Stanley-Mills/Muskegon Chronicle, Snow Good
3rd Kim Brent/Monroe Evening News, Muscles
HM: Kim Brent/Monroe Evening News, Still Life
Comments:
Here were the moments we were looking for in the contest. All three of the first places had them. Especially the interaction in the Christmas tree photo. Although we would have left the second photo in the package. It was also a nice moment as a
secondary photo. In the third-place photo we would have preferred not to have the kid at far left looking at us, but I’m sure that’s what the photographer would have like, too.
Been there, done that. And we have the “bird on light pole” an HM because it was nice composition and we like the idea of the photo column.

Feature/Multiple

1st Kendra Stanley-Mills/Muskegon Chronicle, Touching Memories
2nd John Tully/Midland Daily News, Hunting Buddies
3rd Nathan Morgan/Midland Daily News, In An Instant
Comments:
We really wanted to see a good scene-setting photo. Something to bring us into the story. They all were good ideas done well, but that would have really helped the reportage. Again, it’s about the moments and waiting for them
