Comments:
1st: The judges were drawn to the starkness of the first place image. The empty expression, composition, lighting and even the way the subject held the cigarette in his mouth added to unique feel of the photograph.
2nd: The second place photo had a really nice composition. It’s a very clean photograph that does a wonderful job of capturing a scene. It needed a moment or something that showed why these people were gathered.
3rd: The third place photograph has some really nice emotion. If the composition and background were cleaner, the photograph would’ve placed higher.
Sports
1st Cory Morse/Muskegon Chronicle, Soccer Action
2nd Jan-Michael Stump/Traverse City Record Eagle, Soccer Celebration
3rd John Tully/Midland Daily News, Football celebration
Comments:
1st: Unique peak action in the first place photo. Great body posture. A very physical photo that one doesn’t often see from a high school soccer game.
2nd: A really nice celebration/dejection photo. Both sides of the story are told in one photograph. The composition is nicely simple and clean.
3rd: A really nice moment in the third place photo. Composition is strong, but the background emotion (people milling about, lack of excitement) doesn’t support the foreground emotion (joy, girl leaping into the arms of the player).

2nd John Tully/Midland Daily News, Lamp Shade
3rd Kendra Stanley Mills/Muskegon Chronicle, Leaves
Comments:
1st: Beautiful lighting and color palette make this image more than a standard silhouette. The Colors blend like water colors and create a surreal background.
2nd: A classic moment that says so much about the unique nature of the costume wearer. The simple lighting and composition make this image clean and comical.
3rd Oh what fun! The leaves the smile, a great moment.

2nd: Loved the Halloween Portraits they we sort of strange and haunting. Love the Pig head!
3rd: Nice job observing the anxiety of the subjects is palpable.
