News

1st Kim Brent/Monroe Evening News
2nd Nathan Morgan/Midland daily News
3rd Kim Brent/Monroe Evening News
Comments:
Loss was the theme of all three winning pictures in the news category. Kim’s first place photo had the most emotion. Nathan’s second place photo was solemn and informational – and such a painful loss of both child and home (great caption!) Third was a portrait of mother and child after she lost her 19 year-old daughter to a drug overdose. Compassionate and sad.

Sports

1st Cory Morse/Muskegon Chronicle – Soccer Goal
2nd Cory Morse/Muskegon Chronicle – Soccer Action
3rd Amanda Larkin/Midland Daily News – Chemics Advance
Comments:
A “game” photo is great to have and Cory got on in the goalie’s miss of an overtime goal. He also got a very good game action photo for second. The expression on Ashley Firestone’s face makes the picture. Third was a very good jubilation picture. It would have won if it had the ball and was just a bit sharper in focus.

Feature/Single

1st Nathan Morgan/Midland Daily News – Mustang Memories
2nd Doug Tesner/Traverse City Record-Eagle – Stretch
3rd John Tully/Midland Daily News – 5/15
Comments:
The winner was a real stand-out. It was s different view of a routine event. Second is a funny photo that made us laugh. Good job of seeing and waiting for the right moment. Third was the best of the rest from a weak category.

Feature/Multiple

1st John Tully/Midland Daily News – Out of War
2nd Dave Weatherwax/Jackson Citizen-Patriot – Alternative Thinking
3rd Kendra Stanley-Mills/Muskegon Chronicle – Cheers
Comments:
This category was easy to judge as there were only three entries. First was the obvious choice. Clean and well composed photos. Second placed showed the shooter spent more time with the subject than usual. Good job. Third was a nice collection of photos from a neighborhood [illegible].
