2nd Nathan Morgan/Midland Daily News – Mother’s Hug
3rd Bryan Bosch/Monroe Evening News – Burned Out
Comments:
We loved the body language and sense of place in the first image. We thought the emotional connection in the second place photo was stronger than the photo we chose for third.
Sports
1st Nathan Morgan/Midland Daily News – Safe at Home
2nd Cory Morse/Muskegon Chronicle – Shot Put
3rd Cory Morse/Muskegon Chronical – Soccer
Comments:
We chose our first place image for being a different take on baseball. We also through the second place photo was unique, but the photo had a busy background. The third image was a strong sports action photo, but lacked the unique approach of the other two winners.
Feature/Single
1st Nathan Morgan/Midland Daily News – Tim Hoshor
2nd Shaminder Dulai/Midland Daily News – Music Library
3rd Kim Brent/Monroe Evening News – Porch
HM Erik Holladay/Jackson Citizen-Patriot – Hoops in the Rain
HM Nathan Morgan/Midland Daily News – Tea Ceremony
Comments:
We through the five finalists were all strong. The top three stood out because of the level of intimacy in the images. The honorable mentions were nice images, but we felt like we’d seen them before.
Feature/Multiple
1st Kendra Stanley-Mills/Muskegon Chronicle – Vanishing Piece of History
2nd Erik Holladay/Jackson Citizen-Patriot – Northwest Alternative H.S. Basketball
3rd Dave Weatherwax/Jackson Citizen-Patriot – A Special Bond
Comments:
We love that the photograph for “Vanishing Piece of History,” took a non-visual story and gave it life and intimacy by connecting it to the lives affected by the demolition. We thought the second story was well-shot and love the intimacy of the laundry shot.
