Comments:
First place stood out immediately from the other entries. The photographer did an excellent job of capturing the isolation and sorrow of the subject. Excellent job.
Second place was an unusual take on a fatality accident. We’ve all had to cover these and this was an interesting angle.
Sports
1st Cory Morse / Muskegon Chronicle — Grand Haven-Muskegon
2nd Erik Holladay / Jackson Citizen-Patriot — Rebound
3rd Erik Holladay / Jackson Citizen-Patriot — Block
HM Erik Holladay / Jackson Citizen-Patriot — Block Girls Basketball
Comments:
There were dozens of mediocre sports photo entries, but the first place photograph of three Grand Haven defenders lined up over a Muskegon player was terrific. Outstanding! An excellent and unique basketball photo.
Holladay’s loose framing on the rebound shot was a great use of angle and lighting. His third place winner of the block to the face of the player was nice also.
Feature single
1st Dave Weatherwax / Jackson Citizen-Patriot — Park Hockey
2nd Tyler Sipe / Traverse City Record-Eagle — Handprint
3rd Douglas Tesner / Traverse City Record-Eagle — Surfer
Comments:
Weatherwax’s feature of a father and son playing hockey is beautifully framed. A very nice moment.
Sipe’s frozen handprint is very unusual. I’m sure he had to wait quite some time to get the reaction he was looking for from a passerby.
Feature multiple
1st Tyler Sipe / Traverse City Record-Eagle — For the Love of the Sport
2nd Tyler Sipe / Traverse City Record-Eagle — Ice Fishing
3rd Erik Holladay / Jackson Citizen-Patriot — Snow Golf
Comments:
Of all the categories, this one was the weakest. The potential of many of these stories was pretty good, but execution was short of spectacular.
