News
1st Douglas Tesner / Traverse City Record-Eagle — Animals Lost in Fire
2nd Alex Stawinski / Midland Daily News — Soldier’s Memorial
3rd Cory Morse / Muskegon Chronicle — Ship Aground
Comments:
Tesner’s photo of a grieving pet owner had impact because of how close he brought us to the subject. Strong photo.
Stawinski’s soldier memorial we’ve seen before, but it is a clean shot of a quiet moment of grief.
Morse’s ship grounding made you wonder what was going on in the photo.
Sports
1st Stuart Bauer / Flint Journal — Soccer Header
2nd Brett Marshall / Midland Daily News — Victory Hug
3rd Amanda Larkin / Monroe Evening News — Game Face
HM Erik Holladay / Jackson Citizen-Patriot — Coin Toss
Comments:
Bauer’s excellent soccer header photo is an excellent example of peak action. Good crop.
Marshall’s “Victory Hug” is a different kind of victory celebration that included nice body language from the assistant coach. Photo could use cropping off the top.
Larkin’s “Game Face” was sweet and amusing. The other photos rounded out the “little boy” aspect of this tough sport.
Holladay’s “Coin Toss” is a pre-game moment we haven’t seen before.
Feature single
1st Kendra Stanley-Mills / Muskegon Chronicle — Lions Roar
2nd Mary Powers / Monroe Evening News — Hay Play
3rd Dave Weatherwax / Jackson Citizen Patriot — Leaf Wars
HM Erik Holladay / Jackson Citizen Patriot — Horse Drawn Carriage
Comments:
Good category of photos.
Stanley-Mills’ “Lions Roar” took first because of nice spontaneity it captured.
Powers’ “Hay Play” had an interesting perspective. Judges disagreed if subject looking straight at the camera added or detracted from impact of the photo.
Weatherwax’s “Leaf Wars” caught a “Huck Finn” moment in young lives.
Holladay’s horse-drawn carriage could have been improved by cropping of telephone poles on right of photo. Evocative morning photo.
Feature multiple
1st Kendra Stanley-Mills / Muskegon Chronicle — Love Essay
2nd Kim Brent / Monroe Evening News — Football Friday
3rd Brett Marshall / Midland Daily News — Beauty Revealed
HM Dave Weatherwax / Jackson Citizen Patriot — The King
Comments:
Judges loved Stanley-Mills’ “Love Essay” probably Best of Show for the month. She clearly took her time to work hard on telling individual portraits of these subjects. Good job!
Brent’s horrible layout of her photos did not detract from the strong images in the package.
Marshall’s Guatamala trip produced a solid package with several gorgeous photos.
Weatherwax got an honorable mention just for the great lead single of the impersonator looking into the mirror. Fun photo!
